We waited months and months for this milestone, speculating what would happen in the house when the temperature outside dropped below zero. Would we have to hold a party to generate body heat in order to keep warm? Would we be huddling around the pellet stove with blankets? Or knocking on the neighbors’ door begging to be let in from the cold?
I hopped out of bed at 7 a.m. Sure enough, the weather czars had been right and the outdoor temperature was negative 2. Inside it was a comfortable 72.
In fact, the whole day turned out to be rather anticlimactic. While the outdoor temperature climbed to 12 around midday, the interior of the house stayed in the low 70s with help from the pellet stove and sunny skies. The humidity was rather low, in the 20s. But otherwise, it was just fine. Sigh.

Hooray! These super cold days are one of the worst-case scenarios for heat loss, the other more common one being prolonged gray spells, which usually don’t happen when it’s very cold. So bravo south windows and pellet stove!

That’s great! Continue to be warm.
